Many managers recognize the hassle of creating the shift schedule each week. These days many shift managers will use employee scheduling software to create a successful schedule in minutes each week.

The majority of shift scheduling software is web based which brings many advantages. Firstly if the schedule is online it can be viewed from any internet connected computer. If the employee previously had to visit the workplace or phone this is a big time saver for time. In addition to this the manager can create the shift schedule from home too.

Previous to using the software the manager may of spent a lot of time each week finding out the availability of staff for the next week. With the software the employees can enter the hours they are available so they are only given shifts at times that are suitable. The shift manager can then easily see the availability of all their employees.

The next step is for the manager to enter the shifts available in the next schedule. Since the system knows the availability of employees it can then automatically start assigning shifts to employees – only at times they are free.

The software can also be used to manage time off of staff. When the employee is added to the system a maximum amount of days off can be specified. These requests can be either approved or denied by a shift manager. The employee will be removed from the schedule on the day they requested.

Using a paper based system it can be troublesome if a employee can no longer work a shift they have been given. Now other suitable employees can be quickly contacted using the web based system and the shift offered to them. If they accept it is instantly transferred over to them. This can be ideal for employees that wish to work more hours than they are currently assigned.
