Building muscle, or getting stronger, means applying progressive resistance on your muscles. As you apply greater levels of resistance to your body; your body responds by getting stronger and bigger. It’s a simple cause and effect relationship.

Were it also that easy. Because if it were easy, then there would be a lot of hugely muscular folks running again. And most fitness trainers would be out of business.

Still, being hard and challenging doesn’t undercut its straightforwardness.

There are three components to building muscle – resistance training, diet, and rest-recovery.

The most popular from of resistance training is free weights. Its effectiveness is inarguable. For many people, including me, it is simple the best form of applying consistent, progressive resistance to your muscles. And it is real life.

Still, elastic resistance bands has a few clear, distinct aspects that actually make it more effective for some folks. First and foremost, it is not gravity based. Most traditional exercises, be it free weights or bodyweight, are based on gravity. Elastic resistance bands are not.

Because gravity is not a factor, the stress is directly on the muscle and not so much on joints and ligaments. Some exercises like squats incorporate both gravity – your body – and the nongravity – lack of a barbell across your upper back.

For those of us with bad joints, exercising with resistance bands is safer because the stress is minimal on the joints and ligaments.

Additional, because gravity is not a factor, you can do exercises like standing chest flyes; where you start with your arm out to your side, parallel to the ground. From there, you bring the arm across your chest, same as the fly movement. It’s a different feel across your upper and inner Pec area.

Systems that come with bands with different strength loads allow you to work in progressive manner same as free weights.

Of course, with its lightweight designed and portability, not getting a workout or skipping a workout is no longer excusable.

Lastly, even a complete system like Bodylastics start at under 50 bucks; so unlike costly free weight systems, elastic resistance bands are more than affordable.

While, I do not believe elastic resistance bands are superior to free weights in its totality, it does have its place. For some, it may even be more preferable.

More to the point, it can effectively work your muscles. And any system that can effectively make you stronger will also build muscle, provided you feed it and rest it.
