Violence is rampant nowadays, and you could see this every time you read newspapers that show news on bullying, shootings, domestic violence, or workplace rudeness. In many studies and researches, it was found that at least a third of all marriages have at least one episode of domestic violence. There are also a million kids in the US who are physically abused in their homes. Uncontrolled anger rage can shatter relationships – both personal and professional.

Anger is not just one emotion but a mixture of emotions connected to our behavior and our brains. Once we experience anger, we feel a change through our body. This change prepares our body to face threats. Anger originates in the brain’s limbic system, located in the middle part of the brain. The amygdala, on the other hand, stores our memories and this triggers “old anger.” However, we can control our response to it.

Anger management deals with choosing our response to the situations or instances that make us angry. It is about using up the energy brought about by anger into something useful. Those who can control and manage their anger well enjoy healthy relationships and fulfill most of their needs. Being able to master anger is not easy and needs proper help and guidance. However, there are different steps that you could take.

The first thing that you can to is recognize stress. Stress usually triggers mood changes from being calm to being angry. It causes are brain to activate a powerful defense mechanism called “fight or flight” response. Learn to recognize stress to be able to control your anger. Next is you should learn to empathize. Everyone has their own battles in life. Be conscious of the mood of the people around you, as well as their feelings. Another important thing is not to react, but respond instead. Learn to forgive. Lastly, relax and unwind.
