From the earliest days when folk first started to keep track of time, the pocket watch has survived and it is an item that’s still much asked for today though  only for the sake of reminding one of times gone by. Naturally it came after sundials, water clocks and even candle clocks, but these have slumped into obscurity and nobody remembers them because they never survived once the more well-liked pocket watches began to be used by one and all.

The earliest pocket watches were only affordable to the rich and rich and owning one essentially came to suggest social standing and authority as well as was a depiction of wealth. Actually it was only during the sixteenth century that the pocket watch first made its appearance. It was revolutionary in that it may be transported on the individual and wasn’t the immovable watch that was the norm up till this new kind of watch hit the market.

It was normal to wear the pocket watch on a pendant that was hung around a person’s neck. After Charles II came out with the waistcoat with pockets that these watches then started to be carried in the pockets of the waistcoats. It was at this time too that another revolution in timekeeping was taking place and hence these watches managed to give more correct time and many of them actually had an alarm.

In the seventeenth century the pocket watch grew to become more enticing and it started to be made in slimmer as well as rounded cases that replaced the earlier box shapes and new designs started to come to market. The discovery of the laws of pendulum improved the working of the pocket watch far more and by the 1700’s they had reached a top in their development.

Jewels were added and diamonds too formed an integral part of the pocket watch and so these timepieces became more expensive and even oil came to be used for the sake of lubricating as well as smoothening the watch’s hand movements.

Towards the end of the 18th Century pocket watches came to have 3 hands and they began to tell seconds and were therefore more correct. The peak time as far as the pocket watch is concerned happened in the nineteenth century which is when a couple of enormous name watchmakers commenced manufacturing these watches and made them more precise and in the twentieth century these watchmakers were even given certificates testifying to their ability to turn out awfully definite watchs.

Today, there are several types of watches being acquired by the general public and within them are Swiss watches that are famous worldwide for being very correct and exact. With the arrival of the wrist-watch, the pocket watch is now only being purchased as a memento of times gone by.
