I really like DVD courses, they are relatively cheap but are usually high quality, and you can learn pretty much anything from them like dancing, the drums, you can even get a few Blues guitar DVD courses too. The advantage of having a DVD course over just following a book is that you actually get to watch what the fingers of the instructor are doing as they demonstrate the different songs and techniques, as well as hearing what that piece should sound like as well.
I know you should be able to read the sheet music and play a piece straightaway, but in reality I think that listening to how it is supposed to be played really helps you understand the piece and how the more difficult parts should be played etc. Now imagine if you used a book instead, then you wouldn’t be able to watch or listen to anything and you’d have to learn new techniques from just a few pictures and some written descriptions, plus any example pieces you have to play would just be written notes too.
You need to be aware though that every course I have seen, whether that is a DVD or book, is designed to teach someone who can already play the guitar how to adapt their playing for the Blues. So you need to actually be able to play the guitar pretty well, and understand all the key concepts too, before you buy something to teach you the Blues. Thankfully if you don’t know how to play the guitar at the moment then there are a huge range of resources out there that can help you out. There are membership websites with hundreds of videos on, free videos on Youtube, as well as DVD courses and even downloadable courses too.
