You will be faced with lots of decisions, when renovating or building, while you attempt to make your budget stretch to cover all the things you want. Your builder may have different options to offer you, or tempt you with, to upgrade in certain areas. What things should you really include and where can you save a bit of money? These tips are to help you understand more about the upgrades you may be offered and which ones are worth the money because they will be more expensive to add later.

It is really worth considering taking up any offer of additional floor space or added square footage. Adding extra floor area is likely to cost more later on. There is also the possibility of legal limitations which could prevent you being allowed to add on later. This particular upgrade is one that should be seriously considered, as it is definitely worth the money.

Additional electrical outlets are another frequently offered upgrade. While you may think that you have enough power outlets, you often find they are not conveniently positioned or you need more. They are much cheaper to have installed during the building phase than sometime in the future, and won’t involve putting new holes in the wall (which is what will happen if you decide to add extra power outlets later on). If you are offered an upgrade of extra power outlets, you would benefit from taking this option up; you will be glad you did. This is also an option that is worth the money.

The same applies to an optional upgrade in cable and telephone jacks, because these will also cost more if you have them added later on. If you are offered an upgrade in the number of phone and cable connections, give serious thought to it. You will have more choice as to where these connections go in the house, and having extra will always come in handy. At the same time, consider having an extra line installed for a fax machine, which you might want later on, perhaps for a future home office. Remember that telephone and cable jacks often dictate where your furniture has to go, so keep this in mind when deciding whether to take up this option. This is another upgrade option definitely worth the money.

A popular upgrade offered by builders is the kitchen of your dreams. You may want a kitchen that is expensive, but certain parts of it may be considerably cheaper to have done while you are building, compared to leaving it to some future time. Certain parts of the kitchen can be updated in the future without too much trouble, including the flooring, cabinets and counters; but if you want to change the shape of the kitchen or add a kitchen island, this can be expensive, and sometimes impossible. Any major alterations to the configuration of the kitchen can be very messy and pricey when done at a later time, so try to get the basics of your design constructed during building, so you will eventually have your dream kitchen. You might have to scrimp in another area, like not having your dishwasher straight away, but your basic kitchen design will be in place, together with electricity and plumbing outlets.

Having read these tips you will have better information to make decisions about the home upgrades you are offered.
