Hamper and Gift Supplier Virginia Hayward Ltd works to reduce the Company’s carbon footprint

Dorset based Virginia Hayward Ltd (VH), supplier of hampers and gifts to John Lewis, Waitrose, Selfridges and Interflora, are working hard to reduce their carbon footprint by expanding what is now known as the ‘Millennium Wood’ with the introduction of 3,300 native British trees.

“The Millennium Wood was not designed as a project to mark the Millennium and was conceived long before the idea of reducing one’s carbon footprint became fashionable” says Director Geoff Hayward who, along with his wife and Director Gin Hayward, initiated the tree planting in 2000, “The timing was coincidental and the ‘moniker’ stuck, but our primary objective was to transform some of our unused land into a wooded area that would be full of native British trees and home to wildlife. We also hoped that in years to come, the wood would be a tranquil place that we could enjoy too.”

Following ten years of successful growth, the Haywards felt that it was time to expand the ‘Millennium Wood’ and arranged for another 3,300 native British trees to be planted near to the existing woodland. In association with Thornhayes Nursery of Cullompton, Devon, a variety of trees were planted, including Oak, Ash, Cherry, Crack Willow, Spindleberry and many more. All trees are indigenous to this beautiful area in Dorset.

Geoff Hayward says, “We are all under pressure to reuse and recycle and this is an ethos that we carry right through our business, ensuring that we’re using recycled cardboard or biodegradable packaging where possible. We wanted to go the extra mile and do something which would directly reduce our carbon footprint, as well as leave a lasting and beautiful legacy. I am certain that we have achieved that.”
