Imagine the world without engineering and you’ll instantly think of a picture you saw from a book on prehistoric times. There would be no high-rise buildings racing to touch the sky first. You wouldn’t see cars or highways where people travel and deliver items with efficiency. Electronic devices and computers would be non-existent, making work and entertainment activities less enjoyable. The world would be totally stuck in what is known now as the primitive past. Everything is primordial, which means that living is more difficult.

Fortunately, you were born in an era when scientists and engineers had developed ideas into realities. Engineering has already grown into a significant factor for modernization along with the mathematical advances and its practical applications. In fact, even engineering as a concept has seen many changes. Engineering was nothing but experimental application of mathematics. Now, numbers have taken a backseat; giving directions but not actually driving. This is the time when engineering technology has become a separate academic program.

Unlike engineering, which is applied mathematics and science, engineering technology is applied engineering. Students in this academic program spend less time digging up the past to learn about the history of technological concepts. Therefore, they don’t encounter much of the mathematical origins of such ideas. However, he’ll concentrate more on the potential capabilities of current devices in order to realize these through actual innovations. Enrolling in this course will give you an opportunity to invent or to innovate.

You should, however, learn the difference between this course and an engineering degree. As mentioned earlier, it doesn’t deal predominately with mathematical equations. The students in an engineering program concentrate more on the theoretical bases. Given the training that he gets, he’ll not often be in the field or on the production lines. Instead, he’ll be together with his fellow engineers inside the planning room discussing strategies for product development. Unfortunately, this may cause him to being unaware of the real problems besetting production.

One who graduates with a degree in engineering technology can expect to be employed as the person who makes things happens. He may not be the one drawing the plans but he is the person who makes those ideas work. In fact, they may even consult with you before they start formulating plans. That’s how important his task is in whatever engineering field it is, whether it’s nuclear and radiological or computer and electronics.

If you want, you can choose to enrol in a more time-consuming engineering course. After all, you’re the only one who can decide on your career path. However, if you think that too much mathematics is not very good for you, then enrol yourself in an engineering technology degree instead. Here, you will surely enjoy creating or innovating devices to make them more effective for whatever purpose they serve. It encourages you to build machines and other devices that will contribute to the continuing process of modernization.
