Bowling has long been considered a family pastime, and there are a number of leagues and associations in the U.S. that promote professional bowling as well. But the sport is actually a derivative of Egyptian bowling, and has been a sport for thousands of years. Here is some information on the game of bowling that will give you more of an appreciation for the sport.
It is believed that Egyptian bowling was the first variation of bowling, and started around 5200 B.C. Archaeologists discovered bowling pins and a ball next to an Egyptian tomb, and these items resemble the items we use for these types of sports games today. In early 300 A.D., bowling was adapted throughout Europe, and different countries started to develop their own versions of the game. For instance, in Finland and Germany, the game was only played by the kings and royal courts. In Italy, bocce ball, which is a variation of bowling, was created. German and Italian immigrants actually brought the game of bowling as we know it to the U.S.
Now that Egyptian bowling had evolved to fit the lifestyles and preferences of people in other countries, technology was introduced to make the game more engaging. Around the 1950s, most of the bowling center locations in the U.S. had the ball return and pin-resetter feature. The popularity of the game started to grow in the U.S., and became an activity that bowling groups, teens, and families still enjoy today.
Much like traditional Egyptian bowling, the game consists of three main items–a lane, bowling pins, and a bowling ball. Balls for bowling can be between 8 and 16 pounds, and have three drilled holes in them where the bowler places his or her fingers. Being able to grip the ball this way helps to throw the ball down the lane with more accuracy. There are a set number of pins at the end of the lane, and the bowler scores points based on how many pins are knocked down per try.
The game of Egyptian bowling is definitely a leisure activity for most people these days. However, there are some athletes that bowl daily in professional leagues. While this is not as popular a sport as basketball or football, bowling teams still receive significant endorsements and have a substantial following. Bowling alleys are also an important part of the economy in a number of cities and towns. There are also leagues for children and teens, so you can get your child involved in bowling just by signing up at your local bowling alley or community center.
