Despite the recession there are still lots of people who won’t shop at Goodwill or a basic thrift store. There are a variety of reasons for this, some of which we will tackle here.

1. Thrift stores are dirty and smelly. Ok, some of them are, but not all. And despite this, you would probably wash everything you bought once you got it home anyway. You’re supposed to wash brand new items, too, so there is no change in procedure here. The smell is something you may have to live with in order to save 80% on your clothes.

2. The stuff is used. Ok true. But, new things you bought yesterday and wore today are now used. You still wear them. You’ll clean these used items and they’ll be just fine. Besides, some of the items you find are actually still new with tags on them.

3. The clothes are out of date or off brand. Fine. But you should learn to buy things that you like and not what the TV ads tell you to like. A pair of jeans that fits is more valuable than any name brand pair anyday.

4. You’re afraid to go there. Take a chance and try something new. Visit a local store where you’ll likely find a familiar face and lots of great deals.

If you’re truly averse to thrift stores, start by going to a consignment store which is generally considered a step up. Work up the excitement over getting such great deals and expand your shopping base to as many of these stores as you can find.
