Reading is enormously critical to me, and I want it to be important to my kids too. Although most times, being outside riding on the latest kids scooters would be a lot more fun, developing the routine and passion for reading is important.

As kids get older, the same old childrens book is just not going to continue to be appealing. Your children may have some stories that they take pleasure in hearing over and over again, but they’ll start to convey them back to you because they know it so well. Although they cannot read yet, they have heard the stories so many times that they can narrate them verbally to you word for word. That’s usually when you know it’s time to invest in some extra books for the collection.

On occasion they are ready for more complex stories. And of course it’s good to acquire a book with plenty of chapters that’s geared to their age. Something that can read a little every night before bed, but not something that can be finished immediately. It should be a basic story that can be easily understood and easily remembered from night to night, but yet a book complex enough to open out their imagination as we read through it.

In general, I like to hunt for a new childrens book at our area bookstore. For the sake of simplicity, I generally stay away from a long book series and look for short books that I read and get through in a small number of sittings maximum.

I’ll also check with friends and family and get suggestions and recommendations of their favorite childrens book and bring that list with me during my hunt. Since all children are unique and have their own likes and dislikes I always base my ultimate decisions on the child’s personality and interests.

The majority of times I will buy 2-3 books and allow them to make the ultimate book choice. Letting the child be a part of the final selection and decision-making always makes them more excited about starting a new book.
