A typical type of martial arts equipment has got to be the uniform. Usually consisting of three pieces- Jacket or shirt, pants or shorts and a type of belt, sometimes a sash. Most styles use a jacket type top, a form of trousers or pants and some type of belt to signify rank. Let’s take a look at one of the most common uniforms, the Karate Uniform. Karate students and masters wear a light, medium or heavy weight white cotton suit. A club badge is usually worn on the left side of the jacket. White trousers with a drawstring waist are worn as well. Practitioners are expected to be clean and tidy at all times to show respect for their school and the art.
The jacket/top uniform seems to be the most common type. However, different disciplines will use many different types of uniforms. Everything from Tank Tops, Short or long sleeved shirts, shorts and sashes can be seen. Some disciplines use a sturdier uniform due to the type of training. Jiu Jitsu students, with all its take downs, locks, holds tend to prefer a sturdy cotton uniform. This prevents the need to replace their uniforms continually by withstanding the tugging and pulling forces that are applied during combat. Because some disciplines employ huge arrays of throws and chokes in their arsenal, a light-weight uniform would be ripped apart in virutally no time. In general a single or on occasion a double weave outfit is donned to stand up to the rigors that it will face.
Failing to use the correct martial arts supplies, will be an impediment to training whichever discipline you select. Almost all styles use a type of gi that does not restrict and allows the student to move freely. This is very critical as it lets the student to fight without being weighed down. Competing can be very intense. Hampering uniforms can be a detriment to mastering of required forms that are essential to the Martial Art.
